How much does a Divorce cost?
Family solicitors generally charge an hourly rate for the work they carry out, therefore the cost of any legal work will depend on the complexity and extent of the work to be carried out.
For example, a divorce may involve a number of different aspects which need to be dealt with. How many of these aspects relate to your own situation will have a bearing on the cost. For example, if you have children or not.:
- Divorce – legally ending the marriage itself.
- Financial settlement – is there a jointly owned property and other assets to be divided up. If so this may require the help of a solicitor to negotiate a settlement.
- Children – if there are children then the issues of who they will live with and what contact they will have with the other parent need to be agreed upon. Again, a family solicitor can help to negotiate this.
The amount of work needing to be done by the solicitor will vary with each case and will often depend on how much you and your ex-partner agree, or disagree on each aspect. Settlement negotiations can be short or drawn out, depending on the attitude and willingness of both parties to agree.

Who pays the legal fees for a divorce settlement?
In most cases, each party to the divorce will have their own solicitor and will be responsible for their own legal fees.
In some circumstances it may be possible to include the payment of legal fees as part of the financial settlement if this is included in the negotiations.
